  • AGN was asked to intervene in a horse auction gone bad. A women in Texas was forced to sell three of her mother’s horses because of terminal health issues. The horses went to auction with the promise of a sale to a private party, but the promise was broken and the trio separated and sold off.

After many long hours of fact finding and negotiating, AGN was able to locate the trio, pay their bail and transport them. The auction and life circumstances left the trio al very thin and loaded with parasites which caused them to be quarantined for over two weeks.

Legend and Shorty were so tightly bonded that we felt anything other than coming to love at AGN would put them at risk of being separated. The adorable third horse min horse in the trio came to Arizona to be part of a local non-profit mini horse therapy program. Legend and Strom never leave each other’s side and will live together in harmony at AGN.

  • We don’t know all the darkness of past cruelty that Sedona carries with her but we do know it is significant and was life altering and defining for her.

3 years ago an angel stepped into her life forever changing her journey. That angel is Liz Radley. Sedona was going to be sold back to the horse trader who likely had a hand in the past cruel offenses. Thankfully, her angel intervened providing her with a fresh start.

Sedona spent 3 years with a trusted, skilled and compassionate trainer to find out if she could get through her past trauma and be safely ridden. It was finally determined that the amount of stress and fear being ridden created for Sedona, and huge risk for the rider, was not what was in her best interest.

Another angel became part of Sedona’s next chapter. That angel is Marlene Dodge. She is one of the most intuitive horse women at understanding the individual needs and true essence of a horse. She knew the very best thing for Sedona was to go to a trusted sanctuary where she could just be but never be ridden.

AGN is honored to be that sanctuary.

Sedona is an extremely intelligent and intuitive being. Special beyond what we can even imagine. We believe her healing journey will be a transformative one not only for her but those she heals in the process. She is powerful medicine and we believe has a huge purpose in this life that will eclipse the notion of her being ridden.

  • This beautiful soul, we’ve named Pancho was surrendered from a defunct backyard rescue. He arrived in very bad shape, no medical attention, improper diet and no hoof care were just the beginning. AGN immediately addressed Pancho’s issues.

Pancho will be integrated into our burrow heard to help him learn to play and enjoying just being a burrow. He will need continued ongoing medial and nutritional care.

  • AGN was able to rescue 6 burrows from a livestock slaughter auction in Texas. Their journey was to have been crammed into a transport truck, hungry and scared, headed to Mexico were they would experience the most cruel and inhumane deaths. There were 2 adults and 4 babies, orphaned from their mothers.

There were several bonded pairs at the auction. Heartlessly, people would buy one and leave the other. The focus of our lifesaving effort was to save the bonded pairs and leave no one behind.

After spending 30 days in quarantine in Texas, all 6 safely arrived AGN still very, very sick and will require extensive and on-going medical treatment. The burrows are now enjoying fresh air, proper medical care and nutrition and most important toys to play with. At first they did not know how to play, but have quickly found joy in a deflated ball and tug of war with one another.

  • We received an email from a Tempe police officer asking if we had room at our sanctuary for an officer who was going into early retirement due to his disabilities.

A gentle giant, who prior to his work in law enforcement, endured an extensive degree of neglect and abuse. Abuse that ultimately led to his disability and inability to fulfill his duties as an officer.

Officer Moose suffers from a neurological condition that affects his coordination. This likely happened due to …a neck or head injury.

This kind soul who has been deemed disabled for duty has many other gifts. Like the kindness he gladly shares with anyone who has the time to reach out a hand to pet him. Or the special interest he takes in all that visit. But his most special gift we believe will be the comfort and peace he will bring to Spirit as her new companion; all 17 hands and 1,400lbs of him. After all, a heart as big as his could never fit in anything smaller.

  • Both Arlo and Bandit were saved from slaughter at the livestock auction. Bandit is 8 years old and his buddy Arlo is 21 years old.

When Arlo was saved he was skin and bones and his hooves were completely grown out and deformed. He had exposed flesh under both eyes where flies were literally eating him alive. He is in better shape now but has a little ways to go yet.

  • Bandit is an 8 year old very handsome burro. He and Arlo were saved from a livestock auction where a bleak fate of death or worse awaited. Bandit’s apprehension around new people tells a story of neglect and abuse. Those days are long behind him now. Only love, kindness, treats and scratches from now on.

  • Once upon a time there was a quarter horse ranch where beautiful paint quarter horses were bred.

When the father handed the reins over to the son the future of the herd and ranch changed forever.

The son chose drugs and the horses paid, some with their lives. They were eventually seized and sent on to a feed lot to go up for auction and likely purchased by killer buyers.

Instead the entire herd was purchased by an incredible equine rescue. Unfortunately it was learned later that a couple of the stallions were purchased by another rescue with the intent of euthanizing them because they were unbroken stallions.

Thankfully, their whereabouts were discovered. One of the stallions wasn’t so lucky though. He was euthanized just one day prior.

The rescuer drove 5 hours to pick this boy up who had already been gelded.

He was the herd leader. Unbroken with the quiet strength of an old soul. He had no desire to be broken. She respected this and waited for a sanctuary that would honor his desire and protect his unbroken spirit.

Eight months later AGN learned of him. After speaking to the rescue it was decided he would find forever sanctuary at AGN.

They made the 10 hour trip to AZ with our newest resident and long-awaited companion for Sky who has been alone for 10 months now since the loss of Thunder.

We are looking forward to our new boy’s journey to accepting kindness from humans. I believe this most unique and special horse is going to not only heal a lonely horse’s heart but he will heal broken humans as well.

In light of the stormy weather the day he arrived and because of his unbroken spirit, we have named him Storm.

  • Spirit was used for trail riding and then abandoned at a boarding facility when she was no longer useful. Spirit’s teeth were so bad she could barely eat, leaving her over 200lbs under weight. She also suffered from an untreated eye condition.

Once Spirit arrived at our Sanctuary & Healing Center, she received immediate veterinary treatment for her teeth and eye. Due to the severity of her eye condition, Spirit will require ongoing care.

Like all of our residents, Spirit is provided with high quality nutrition along with immediate and on-going medical and daily care. Spirit’s habitat is covered to protect her from the elements and cooled with a misting system.

We do not confine our equine residents to their stalls. Each completely covered extra-large stall opens to a large turnout area so they have unlimited enrichment.

  • Abandoned at a boarding facility, Sky lived a life of extreme neglect. It took months to finally get her surrendered and to safety.

Once Sky arrived at the Sanctuary & Healing Center, she received much needed veterinary care, proper nutrition and love. Due to the severity of neglect of Sky’s hooves, she will require special care for the rest of her life.

The very best care for life is something Sky can now count on at AGN.

Canine Residents

  • Introducing Gizmo, the newest senior resident to find sanctuary at Animal Guardian Network.

Gizmo has difficulty with his house training skills which became the reason he was forced to live outside. His life was at risk living outside in a predator heavy area in addition to the extreme temperatures and isolation.

When we received the request for sanctuary we couldn’t take our upcoming move, the fact that we are not taking in new residents until we are settled in our new location or any other reason into consideration. We could not simply say to a fragile 14yo deaf little soul “it’s not a good time” or “you’ll need to wait until we move.

Gizmo needed someone to say “yes, I will help you”. And so we did.

  • Sometimes you need your spirits lifted and extra love when your whole life has been turned upside down at 13 years old. Meet Yoshi, one of our newest residents.

  • We would like to introduce you to 16year old Penny. Her human chose to move with her church group and leave precious little Penny behind because they would not allow her to move with them.

Thankfully an angel willing to help was listening as Penny’s human said she was going to drop her off at the county shelter if no one would take her. A definite death sentence was circumvented. We received Penny’s special request for sanctuary at AGN and are happy to be able to be the soft spot for Penny to land.

This frail, loving gentle and grateful soul wants nothing more than to just belong and be loved. A soft spot to rest, a kind hand, comfort care and a full tummy is such a small thing to need.

  • Duchess “Duchy” has had 5 different families in her 12 years. The last person she was with for 7 years. Then he took a job overseas and chose to look for someone, anyone, to take Duchy.

When the request reached AGN there was one sentence that stuck with me. “I took her to parks, posted her information everywhere and no one wanted her, no one would take her”.

Duchy spent the first several days crying and waiting at the door for her human to come back for her. He did not.

What we didn’t know until her visit to the vet was that Duchy has stage 4 Kidney Disease. Years of the cheapest and worse foods contributed to this non-curable disease.

Her heart and her body are broken now. We are thankful we are able to provide her with the prescription diet and medication that she will now need for the rest of her life. Neither her body nor heart will ever heal but we will make certain she knows every single day how much she’s loved and that she is wanted!

  • Pepe is a 14 year-old soul that was due to be taken to the county kill shelter because he was drinking excessively which caused him to urinate frequently. He had only know one family for all 14 years of his life.

The terror of being in a crowded shelter is unimaginable for any dog but most especially for a fragile senior.

After being evaluated by our vet team it was discovered Pepe had untreated Diabetes with Ketoacidosis. This is a serious condition that can lead to a diabetic coma and even death of left untreated. Additionally, Pepe has an enlarged heart with 5 out of 6 murmur and grade 5 periodontal disease.

Through proper nutrition, careful monitoring of his insulin at AGN Pepe is thriving and making many friends. We have even been able to lowed his daily insulin dosage! Pepe is such a happy loving soul and an AGN favorite of all visitors and sanctuary residents.

  • Ozzie became a new member of the AGN family in October 2016. After 14 years with the same human, Ozzie found himself homeless, alone and out of options. Ozzie is deaf; he arrives weak, frail, and scared. He was terribly matted and in poor health. But in just a few short weeks, this amazing now 15 year-old boy is running around the yard laying, gaining weight an a new happy dog.

  • Jack was found in the middle of a very busy intersection with a partial piece of rope or twine hanging from his collar which is believed to have been used as a tie out. Thankfully a kind person picked him up and spent weeks trying to find where he belonged with no luck.

Jack is partially blind with a horribly infected mouth. We made sure little Jack received the extensive dental surgery, including two skin flaps he desperately needed.

Now Jack spends his days napping, getting belly rubs and bringing joy to everyone he meets.

  • Bear, a 3-year-old German Shepard/Husky mix, was surrendered to a field officer after receiving numerous calls from concerned neighbors. He was taken to the shelter, where, due to his medical condition, it was determined he was not suitable for adoption. Animal Guardian Network was contacted hoping we could take him into our sanctuary. AGN was Bear’s only chance.

Once in the care of AGN, an orthopedic specialists performed a thorough assessment. It was determined that Bear has a severe case of bilateral hip dysplasia and subluxation (hip popping out of joint) in one hip. The condition of Bear’s hips causes constant inflammation and excrutiating pain. This was no way for a young discareded boy to live.

Through many generous Angels, a fundraising campaign was started to help pay for Bear’s surgery. One anonymous Angel donated 95% of the funds needed to perform the necessary surgery!

Once Bear has fully healed, he will be ready for his forever family who will take special care of this amazing boy.

  • Sake is an 11-year-old Shiba Inu. Sake wasn’t consistently socialized so he preferred not to be around other dogs. Sadly, his mom passed away suddenly leaving him without anyone willing to give him a loving home to enjoy his golden years. AGN was contacted in hopes that Sake would be accepted as a lifelong sanctuary resident. Sake now fills his days with naps, breaking in all of his new toys and barking at Curly when he gets too sassy.

Sake would love to have some human friends visit him on a regular basis. He loves to do his toy testing with a friend. Please contact to schedule a love visit with Sake.

  • Ruby is a 9-year-old Shiba Inu. She was picked up as a stray and taken to the county kill shelter where she was incorrectly diagnosed as being arthritic. Once in our care she received a thorough evaluation which revealed she suffered from a broken pelvis most likely caused by a blunt instrument like a 2×4. Ruby was almost feral and understandably terrified of humans.

After a year of her being in our care we were finally able to touch her. Ruby finds happiness and comfort in being surrounded by other dogs and the occasional interaction with humans. She now suffers from elevated eye pressure and requires daily eye drops.

  • Suni is a 7-year-old Shiba Inu. He was surrendered to a kill shelter by the only family he had ever known because he was fearful of their new child and would nip. Suni’s mistreatment is very evident as he is terrified of everything yet he still craves a human connection. Suni will never again worry about being treated harshly. He will learn confidence at his own pace which will give him the ability to accept all the love that is just waiting to be showered upon him. Suni will enjoy the rest of his days at our sanctuary in a safe and peaceful environment.

  • Yuki is an 11-year-old Shiba Inu. He was quarantined by the county kill shelter after he had bitten someone for sitting on him when he was asleep. Sadly, the only family he had ever known decided not to come back for him after his quarantine period was completed, unconcerned that would result in almost certain death. Since Yuki has been in our care, we have found him to be very affectionate and playful. He loves every single person he meets. He is unpredictable with other dogs therefore and best suited to be an only dog. Yuki is available for adoption to someone experienced with the breed and committed to his special needs and sensitivities. Yuki would love a job visiting seniors in a nursing home or like care facility.

  • Tyler is an 11-year-old Shiba Inu. He was surrendered to a county kill shelter because he had been injured and was unable to use his back legs. After undergoing extensive surgery to repair two discs and months of rehabilitation Tyler has full use of his back legs. He has become such a happy and playful boy who loves everyone. Tyler is available for adoption to someone who is experienced with the breed, committed to his care and will keep him safe from re-injuring his back.

  • Terumi is an 8-year-old Shiba Inu. She was picked up as a stray and taken to the county kill shelter. Since Terumi’s condition was so poor, she required immediate care. She had one of the worst skin infections from neglect and poor nutrition leaving her with little remaining fur. Terumi’s rehab took approximately 8 months of intensive skin treatments, allergy testing, nutritional supplements, and a finely tuned diet. Her seasonal allergies will always require medication and special bathing. Terumi is available for adoption to an experienced adopter looking to share their heart and life with this sweet and playful girl.

  • Teddy is an 8-year-old cattle dog special blend. He was picked up as a stray and taken to the county kill shelter. Teddy had a serious injury to his hip, which had gone untreated for many years. His hip injury left him relatively lame making it painful and difficult to get around. After undergoing major orthopedic surgery Teddy is starting to use the repaired leg. We are very optimistic that Teddy will regain 50% use of his leg and no longer have the pain he had been forced to live with for so long. Teddy is such a lovable boy and he will make a great therapy dog to those visiting our Healing Heart Chapel.

  • Hoshi is a 7 -year-old Shiba Inu that was surrendered by his family because he was staring at their newest child. Hoshi is a very smart, playful and loving boy. He is very insecure and nervous around other dogs and new people. Hoshi is available for adoption to someone experienced with the breed and without children. He would do best as the only dog or with a very friendly and non-dominant dog.

  • Butter is a 4-year-old Shiba Inu. She was surrendered when her family moved overseas. She had been cared for but never exposed to new experiences which left her very fearful. We paired Butter with Kado and she became so much happier and more confident. Butter and Kado are inseperable and will only be adopted together by a family experienced with the breed.

  • Foxy is a 6-year-old Shiba inu that was surrendered by a family who bred Akitas that were attacking her. Foxy is a very special, intelligent and sensitive girl. She would be a wonderful therapy dog. Foxy is looking for a family who is experienced with the breed and will love and cherish her for the rest of her life. She would do best as the only dog or with a friendly non-dominant dog.

  • Kado is a 5-year-old Shiba Inu. He was picked up as a stray and taken to the county kill shelter. He was not trusting at first and was uncomfortable with affection.

Since he has been at our sanctuary he has learned to trust and loves attention. He and his best friend Butter are inseparable and will only be adopted together by a family experienced with the breed.

  • Brandi is a 10-year-old mix breed dog that was surrendered by her family to a high kill shelter in CA. She suffered from untreated diabetes leaving her blind and with numerous open and painful wounds on her body. Brandi requires daily injections of insulin along with anti-anxiety medication. She will live out her life cared for at our sanctuary until the perfect family with no other pets is found.

Farm Residents

  • At 6 weeks of age Solo was thrown out of a moving vehicle. A person traveling behind watching in what had to be horror, quickly stopped. Initially, she thought what she saw was actually a puppy being thrown to the ground rather than an almost new born baby goat.

Once she picked him up it was evident Solo needed urgent care. Solo was taken to the vet were it was determined due to the number of fractures in his leg amputation was the best option.

Now, at age 6 Solo found himself in need of not just a sanctuary, but a lifelong sanctuary. He needed a special place where people could bring their love and leave with a heart full of new love. A healing love exchange.

We are so honored Solo found his way home to AGN.

  • AGN was asked by a defunct rescue if we could provide sanctuary to 3 bonded goat buddies. It is often assumed that animals do not grieve loss and can just learn to adapt if a bond is severed. Protecting such bonds is something we are passionate about at AGN. So once again, we opened our hearts and made a little extra space to preserve this bond.

Hank, Cowboy and Archie are 3 of the kindest and most gentle souls. Each has a wonderful and soothing energy about them. We may have given them sanctuary, but the hearts the will fill is innumerable.

  • In early December 2016, little Ivy became part of the AGN family. Thirty-one pigs were abandoned in the backyard of a vacant home formerly the residence of a Mesa, AZ breeder. All 31 were seized and transferred to Circle L Ranch in Prescott, AZ. Several were pregnant. Little Ivy was one of the newborn piglets. AGN was contacted asking if we would accept Ivy as resident at out Sanctuary….we did not hesitate. Providing Ivy a good home at AGN is what our mission is all about.

  • Meet Daisy, the newest resident at AGN. She was surrendered because the family could no longer provide enough time for her. She is extremely underweight at 17lbs but was otherwise well cared for.

Daisy is so very friendly and loves to cuddle especially in laps. She is looking forward to taking over the laps of all the new friends she’s hoping to meet!

  • We would like to introduce our newest resident Wyatt (Earp). Wyatt is an 11 month old lamb that was on his way to the livestock auction to endure a cruel fate.

AGN stepped in and agreed to provide this sweet boy lifelong sanctuary where he would never end up on a dinner plate.

Wyatt is a friendly boy who loves everyone. He is currently housed in a temporary habitat until he is seen by our ranch vet and gets a clean bill of health. We are hopeful that Wyatt will become the buddy Curly has been waiting for. If not he will continue to enjoy the company of the dogs and Daisy.

  • We have a new resident at the ranch, albeit not our usual type.

Clover, a Patagonian Cavy, was used in a petting zoo. Once that became defunct she was banished to a solitary life in an enclosure.

Thankfully, her plight, and that of the other petting zoo victims, was learned by Dannielle Marturana of The Home Stretch Rescue. She was able to get Clover and several others removed but placing Clover was proving to be more challenging.

With the placement of Ringo we had room in a fully enclosed habitat. After extensive research on nutrition and habitat needs we agreed to provide Clover sanctuary at our ranch.

Clover is a very gentle and loving soul. It’s heartbreaking this very social being has never known the company of her own kind. We will continue to evaluate her needs and research other sanctuaries or rescues that may have a Cavy. Ideally, she will either be placed with another Cavy or we will bring in a female Cavy companion for her.

Clover would love some visitors to help ease her loneliness. Please contact us via email or pm if you would like to be a love donor for Clover.

  • The habitat includes re-purposed cedar doghouses, misting system and plenty of open space to roam safely during the day. At night they are put to bed in a completely enclosed hen house where they are safe from predators. It is home to abandoned and disabled chickens and roosters.

  • Curly (western Curly not the 3 stooges) was surrendered by people unable to provide even his basic needs. He lived on a diet of human food found in the neighbor’s trash. He had not received any vetting or proper nutrition while living in their back yard. The only water source was filthy. They had originally gotten the calf as a pet for the children but planned to eat him when he was fully grown. Thankfully they were finally willing to give him up.

Once Curly arrived at our sanctuary & healing center he received much-needed veterinary care, proper nutrition, clean water and love. Curly will never be made to suffer again.

Like all of our residents, Curly is provided with high quality nutrition along with immediate and on-going medical and daily care. Curly’s habitat is covered to protect him from the elements and cooled with a misting system.

We do not confine our livestock residents to their stalls. Each completely covered extra-large stall opens to a large turnout area so they have unlimited enrichment.

Curly is available to meet, hug, scratch and kiss (by appointment only).
